How does sleep deprivation
affect your overall health?
Sleep should be a priority for everyone. If you exercise and eat
well, and do all that is required to ensure your overall well-being
except for getting enough rest, all your efforts can go down the
drain. It is so because not catching good quality sleep affects
your mood, memory, and health. In addition, it has more
surprising and far-reaching effects than you would imagine. So,
in order to help you understand the consequences of sleep
deprivation, we have made a list. Have a glance!
How much sleep do you need?
Each of us feels good after getting proper rest. We feel less
cranky, more energized, and happy after taking a short nap.
According to a report by National Sleep Foundation, different
individuals have different sleep requirements. While toddlers
should ideally sleep for 11 to 14 hours, adults between 26 to 64
years of age should rest for seven to nine hours each day.
Sleeping for the recommended hours will ensure your good
health and well-being.
What happens if you do not get enough
rest?
Lack of alertness-
If you do not rest well through the night, the chances are that you
won’t feel alert and sharp the next day. Instead, you will feel dull
and find it difficult to grasp things. Such behaviour can negatively
affect your work life.
Excessive daytime sleepiness-
Staying awake during the night and waking up early in the
morning can make you feel tired and sluggish. As a result, you
may feel excessively sleepy during the day.
Quality of Life-
If people are not well-rested, they may find it hard to concentrate and
perform day to day activities like exercise. This can degrade their quality
of life.
Relationship Stress-
Those who fail to catch a peaceful night of sleep feel cranky and grumpy.
More often than not, they act in a bizarre and moody way. This can create
conflicts in a relationship and lead to issues between couples.
Impaired Memory-
Sleep offers your brain an opportunity to refresh and re-energize. So, if
you are experiencing sleep deprivation, your mind may find it hard to
process and remember information.
Accidents-
More often than not, drowsy driving becomes the cause of numerous car
accidents, crashes, and fatalities. Those who do not rest for the required
hours find it hard to focus. This can increase the possibility of an accident.
Appearance-
Chronic sleep deprivation also affects your looks and appearance. It can
lead to premature wrinkling and dark circles under the eyes. Also, lack of
sleep is connected to releasing the stress hormone cortisol. Thus, it is
essential to sleep well.
Proper rest is essential for your well-being. Dealing with sleep deprivation
and not resting well can lead to several health issues like memory
problems, mood changes, accidents, and trouble concentrating.
