WHAT IS A FASHION
TECH PACK?
Tech Pack is an entire pack/blueprint or
proposal file of the item which we utilize to
clarify the material or product
preconditions and to get the particular
Exact Quotes, reduce the mistakes, and
Exact production with 100% fulfillment and
satisfaction. So that the manufacturer will
follow project necessities and produce
exact results.
Tech Pack design comprises some
structures like flat Mock-ups, fabrication &
sewing details, accessories, color
combinations, print/embroidery details,
specifications, Labels & Tags, Packaging
Details, BOM, and other technical details
that permit the factory/supplier to deliver
the precise outcomes properly.
• A tech pack is a document that contains all the technical information about
your product.
• It is an important document for designers and production teams in creating
new collections as it helps the manufacturer to clearly articulate every
detail of the production.
• However, many designers often forget this document and dismiss it as
unimportant, resulting in subsequent disruption of communication and
avoidance of costly errors and delays. Read on to find out why tech packs
are so important.
HOW TECH PACK DESIGN LOOKS LIKE
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A GOOD TECH PACK?
Technical Sketches:
•Flat sketches illustrating every design detail in different angles (front, back, side, and yes, even inside). They help your factory and
pattern maker visualize how to make the first sample as close as possible to your desired look. That’s why they are done in black
and white and are typically created on Adobe Illustrator.
Sample Sizes and Measurements:
•When just starting to develop a design you have to provide measurements of one single size for manufacturers to create your first
sample.
Constructions Details:
•Write down any details about the garment which are not obvious in the sketches. These usually include diagrams with labelled
arrows pointing out collars, plackets, cuffs, fastenings, bar tacks and artwork placement.
Bill of Materials (BOM):
•It’s the list of all the physical elements and their location on the garment. This includes all fabrics, buttons, labels, tags, poly-bags,
threads, pads, lining, etc.
Stitches and Seams:
•These includes details such as stitches per inch, seams' width, seam allowances and seam IOS number.
Branding Artwork:
•Detail all brand component and their placement including labels, hang tags, embroideries or small prints.
Measurement specs:
•This can be filled after receiving your first sample. Your factory will grade by size range and fill out your measurement chart. You must
include your tolerance range for each point of measurement to check them against each sample size, so you can request changes if
they don’t fit in.
•
Point of Measurement Diagrams:
•These form the visual representation of your measurements. Use sketch diagrams and labeled arrows to show
exactly where each measurement is on your garment.
Identification on Every Page:
•Include your company name, sample size, date, changes made, requests and version on each page of your tech
pack.
Note: Tech packs are not just static documents. They should evolve as your designs evolve.
WHY IS A TECH PACK IMPORTANT?
• It reduces errors and improves communication.
• It acts as a production manual.
• It reduces delivery times and avoids delays.
• Save time on future collections.
WHAT ARE THE BEST TOOLS FOR BUILDING A TECH PACK?
• Adobe Illustrator is the most commonly used programs for creating tech
packs. This is a great tool that is easy for teams to customize and quick to
learn.
• However, they do not meet the unique and complex requirements of
fashion manufacturing and product development. While it may initially be
easier to create a tech pack in Adobe Illustrator this tool pose problems as
the product evolves during the product development process. If changes
are made, versions are added and sent by email.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES WITH CURRENT TOOLS?
More difficult to collaborate:
• Tech packs are collaboration documents that require changes, comments,
or modifications from employees and manufacturers.
• With read-only attachments, slides, JPG’s, PDF files or offline documents,
this is not that easy. Comments and changes must be made in real time.
Risk of costly mistakes:
• Tech packs created with pdf or similar file formats are attached or
uploaded to a platform such as We Transfer and embedded as a link
and sent via email. This increases the chances of files not being sent to
the right people, or in some cases the link will expire! This method
makes it easy to attach the wrong version, send too many
attachments, or forget about critical sample feedback. These little
human mistakes can be very costly.
Misunderstanding:
• Manufacturers have to get used to the unique tech packs for each
brand that they produce for it - it is easier for them when all of the tech
packs they receive from each brand are standardized.
DIGITAL TECH PACKS ARE THE FUTURE
• Digital tech packs provide functionality similar to tools created with tools
like adobe illustrator, Corel Draw , simply because they're created, shared,
and edited in cloud-based software used by brands and manufacturers.
• By using the G-Studio platform, you can create your own digital tech packs
more quicker.
