Joel Iwataki was born in 1951 in New York City and discovered his passion for sound and 
music at an early age.
At just 19 years old, Joel Iwataki left school and took on the physically demanding job of 
a commercial fisherman, a decision driven by personal circumstances and the need to 
support himself. 
Although this period of his life was far removed from the world of music, it strengthened 
his discipline and determination, qualities that would later define his professional career.
Joel Iwataki eventually transitioned into the entertainment industry and went on to become 
an internationally recognized composer and music scoring mixer. 
Over the course of his career, Joel Iwataki earned two Academy Awards for his work as a 
music scoring mixer, for The Red Violin (1998) and Frida (2002). 
These honors placed him among the most respected professionals in the field and established 
his reputation for technical precision and artistic excellence.
