Characteristics of Acrylic Sheet 
Acrylic is commonly known as Plexiglass, and its chemical 
name is PolyMethyl MethAcrylate or PMMA. Acrylic sheet or 
acrylic board is a lightweight thermoplastic and offers 
thermal insulation properties. Even though it is a form of 
plastic, it is a wonderful alternative to glass and is also 
addressed as acrylic glass by traders. It is strong, stiff, and 
optically clear. Acrylic sheet can easily bond with solvents 
and adhesives, can be fabricated, and is not difficult to 
thermoform. Some characteristics of Acrylic sheets are 
mentioned below.
Transparency and Optical Clarity
Acrylic board has a glossy surface that is available in all types of 
colours. An acrylic sheet can also be clear or transparent, 
translucent, and opaque. Adding colours to an acrylic board 
ensures durability when used for outdoor applications. Designed 
acrylic sheets are a common sight these days.
Temperature Resistant
Acrylic is extremely resistant to fluctuating temperatures. It 
tends to soften at a high temperature but doesn’t melt till it 
reaches 320 °F (160 °C), making it perfect for moulding it 
into different shapes. It is also ideal for outdoor usage and is 
perfect for other household usage, such as tabletops.
Impact Resistant and Lightweight
Acrylic glass is 17 times more impact resistant than ordinary 
glass. Unlike glass, it doesn’t easily break with shock or impact. It 
is very light, half the weight of glass, making it perfect for 
machining into precision components.
Chemical Resistant
Acrylic sheet is BPA free which means it does not have a toxic 
composition. It is resistant to many chemicals and great for 
manufacturing food containers, drawers for refrigerators, etc.
These characteristics of the acrylic board make it an 
advantageous product for a variety of applications.
