THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF
With millions of viewers tuning in to watch the latest series of The Great British Bake
Off, there's no doubt that the UK is seeing a huge revival in good old fashioned home
baking. With the series originally taking off on the BBC, we saw the 'The Mary Berry
effect' as her ladyship stirred the dormant mixing bowls in kitchens around the country.
It's controversial move to Channel 4 which prompted the departure of light hearted hosts
Mel and Sue, along with the legendary Mary Berry, left us in doubt that the show could
ever be the same again. Luckily, the bake off popularity has steadied, with Prue Leith,
Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig at the helm, alongside Paul Hollywood.
The resurgence of traditional baking has gone hand in hand with the rise of vintage
interior styling. The shelves in the back drop of the GBBO tent certainly muster a vintage
feel, and we love it! The bake off tent interior uses soft pastels with a variety of vintage
cookware, which creates a nostalgic, homely feel despite it being a tent in the middle of
a potentially wet and muddy British field!
Creating your own vintage kitchen style couldn't be easier, you don't have to be an
interior designer, and it doesn't have to involve restyling your whole kitchen
interior. Antique dressers and display shelves are a beautiful way to create
eyecatching displays of pretty vintage or antique china plates and crockery collections.
Mixing traditional Royal Doulton china tea sets with antique French plates will certainly
draw the eye in the kitchen or dining room.
Vintage tableware and crockery collections can be displayed on antique dressers
Stoneware pots and jars add a rustic feel and make extra storage for kitchen utensils
Hanging copper cookware is practical, provides a focal point and a rustic feel
Earthenware pots and stoneware flagons create a rustic feel, whilst providing that little
bit of extra kitchen storage for cooking utensils, that we all need! Classic, french
enamelware bowls or storage containers, are a lovely addition to any counter top,
whether you're going for country kitchen, or an eclectic mix of styles.
Copper is definitley 'on trend' right now, and what better way to use copper accents in
the kitchen than to display copper cookware. You'll find a whole variety of copper -
saucepans, preserve pans, pots, egg blanchers, jelly moulds, bundt tins....we could go
on and on, as the list is endless. Hanging copper kitchenware on rails or racks is a
brilliant space-saving way of storing kitchen accessories, and creates a wonderful focal
point in an unexpected place.
Another lovely counter top addition, is vintage scales. Go for traditional kitchen scales or
something a bit different such as these Victorian shop counter scales.
Perhaps the most pleasing thing about vintage home decor, is that it's appeal is very
much based on a mix and match style. It suits any budget and you can be as subtle or
as full on as you wish..use a retro Pyrex dish, alongside an antique dish you inherited
from your Grandparents and see how great it looks!
Of course, for someone aiming to become 'Star Baker', you will no doubt have an
endless wishlist of baking accessories that you will want to get your hands on! Here
at Kernow Furniture we stock a wide range of antique, retro and vintage kitchen
accessories, new stock is always being added and many of our smaller items come
with free national delivery.
