Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the governmental regulating body for the Indian filmmaking industry. Popularly recognized as the Censor Board, the CBFC was set up under the Cinematograph Act of 1952. Its purpose is to declare, by means of screening and rating, the agreement of feature films, documentaries, trailers, short films, and theatre-based advertising for public viewing. In the beginning 21st century the CBFC previewed some 13,500 items per year.
