A cartridge filter is a filtration system which is available in cylindrical shape and can be installed within a pressure vessel to optimize flow channels and chambers, maximizing the filtration area. These filters are mainly used for removing contaminants and particles from liquids. Filtration cartridges are available in a variety of lengths, diameters, and materials, including woven, nonwoven, and membrane-based options.

Filtration Rating & Efficiency
Cartridge filters are essential components of liquid filtration systems, designed to remove particles of specific sizes with
varying degrees of efficiency. They are rated based on their filtration capability, which can be either nominal or absolute. A
nominal filtration rating typically removes around 95% of particles of a given size, whereas an absolute filtration rating
ensures a higher efficiency of 99% or more.
Absolute-rated filters, particularly pleated filtration cartridges, are widely used in high-purity applications such as
pharmaceuticals, food and beverage production, and ultrapure water systems. Standard micron ratings range from 50
microns for coarse filtration to 0.2 microns for fine, high-purity requirements.
A 5-micron filter is commonly used for general-purpose filtration, whereas a 0.2-micron absolute pleated filter is ideal for
critical final filtration stages. Since filtration ratings are determined based on test methods established by each
manufacturer, there can be variations in actual performance. For example, a nominal 1-micron filter may correspond to a
15-micron absolute rating under certain conditions.
Absolute ratings are generally assessed using particle removal efficiency percentages or β-values, which compare the
number of particles before and after filtration. The removal efficiency of absolute-rated filters typically ranges between
99.0% and 99.9% or higher, ensuring optimal filtration performance.
