Allen Bradley 1756 main controllers are CompactLogix (1768, 1769, and 5069 families) and 
ControlLogix (1756 family, 1756, and 1756 families) Programmable Automation 
Controllers. While the ControlLogix is designed for larger, more complicated applications, 
the CompactLogix is meant for smaller, less complex applications. GuardLogix controllers 
are ControlLogix add-ons that give the processor unit a separate safety controller. The 
GuardLogix, and more especially the 5580 GuardLogix controllers, are fundamentally 
identical to ordinary 5580 ControlLogix controllers, with the inclusion of a processor and 
programming intended specifically for safety-related duties. The GuardLogix has memory 
sizes between 3MB and 20MB, compared to the ControlLogix's memory sizes between 3MB 
and 40MB, with an additional 1.5MB to 6MB of memory set aside for safety-related duties.
By using a GuardLogix processor, automation 
and safety operations can be controlled 
simultaneously by a single processor unit. 
Prior to the 5580 series, GuardLogix controllers 
required a safety partner, which meant that 
integrated safety required two different 
processor cards. All but the greatest levels of 
safety can be obtained with a single processor 
unit thanks to the 5580 series' ability to obtain 
reduced safety certification without a safety 
partner. SIL2/PLd level protection can be 
provided by a single GuardLogix 5580 CPU. 
Since this level of safety mitigates the bulk of 
dangers, a single processor safety solution 
was created. The lower price point makes 
more solutions accessible.
