DIFFERENT COMBINATION
LOCK SYSTEM AND THEIR
MECHANISM
MEI LOCK
A combination lock is a type of lock that opens with a series of
numbers or symbols rather than a key. The sequence of numbers
or symbols used is frequently a permutation rather than a true
combination, and they can be inputted using a single rotation
dial or a collection of revolving discs with inscribed numbers or
symbols (which directly interact with the locking mechanism
itself).
Combination cam locks systems which are relatively affordable,
are used for a variety of functions. These locks usually contain
simply three numbers or letters as a combination. Safes, notably
those in banks, have more complicated combination locks,
which require a locksmith to be extremely competent to unlock.
The mechanism works by engaging with the locking device using
numerous rotating discs and cams.
MULTIPLE DIAL
LOCKS:
We'll start with multiple dial locks, which are one of the most basic types of
combination locks. These are frequently employed in low-security scenarios,
such as a bicycle lock with numerous revolving discs cut into notches. The
lock is held in place by a pin with many teeth that latch into the rotating
discs around it. The lock can open when the discs and notches are aligned
with the pin's teeth. Unfortunately, this form of lock has the problem of being
one of the least secure forms of combination locks available today.
It is possible to unlock such a lock without using the combination; it all
depends on little imperfections that arise during the machining of the lock's
pieces. So, unless the lock has been perfectly machined (the pin forced
outward), one of the teeth on its matching disc is likely to pull more firmly
than the others.
When this disc is turned and a little click is heard, the tooth has moved into
its proper notch, and the technique can be repeated with the remaining discs
to unlock the lock (a correct combination on such a lock can be found in a
very short period)
SINGLE DIAL LOCK:
The next type of lock is the single-dial lock, which is typically found
on padlocks or safes and consists of a single dial that interacts with
many parallel discs or cams. Normally, such locks are opened by
rotating the dial clockwise to the first numeral, then counterclockwise
to the second, and so on until the last numeral is reached.
The cams inside the lock usually have an indentation or notch on
them, and the latch can only fit into them and the lock may be opened
once the right combination has been input and the notches or
indentations have gotten aligned.
These types of combination locks are unquestionably more secure
than multiple dial locks, but they do have certain drawbacks.
Certainly, early Master Lock combination padlocks could be opened
by pushing on the shackle and rotating the dial until it stopped,
revealing each digit included in the lock's combination.
MASTER PADLOCK
However, more current variants of the Master padlock now
have a 40-position dial, which has a flaw in that it reveals the
last numeral in the lock's combination, and the lock's initial
two numbers have a mathematical relationship with this one.
Because of this flaw, it decreases the number of possible
combinations a person can try to open it from 64,000 to just
100, which makes it difficult to open.
Unfortunately, an inexpensive padlock isn't the answer, as
they're prone to be shimmed, which is a method of releasing
the shackle without actually entering the combination.
OTHERS
There are many other combination lock and door lock systems that
require the user to enter a numeric sequence on a keypad to gain
admission. However, to be successful, such locks usually require the
usage of electronic circuitry. However, the main advantage of such a
system is that if it is used for the entrance to a large workplace, each
member of staff may be given the number they will need to obtain
access, eliminating the need to present them with keys that may be lost
or stolen.
The only significant downside of this form of lock is that if the code
number for entrance is found by someone who isn't a firm employee, or
if the number isn't updated regularly, an intruder can get access to the
property (such as a burglar).
