BASIC CONCEPT OF AN ELECTRICITY
• An Electricity is a fuel which is required for any
Electrical equipment to operate in its intended
manner.
• Unusual Commodity
• Required as a continuous flow.
• Cannot be conveniently stored in a quantity.
• Electric Power: It is a Rate at which work is done.
• P = V X I X COSØ…………………For AC Circuits
• P = V X I ………………………….For DC Circuits
• Electric Energy: when power is applied for certain
duration of time, an energy gets consumed by an
equipment.
• Every equipment is designed to operate on certain
rated conditions, these conditions are mentioned on
the Nameplate of an equipment.

WHAT IS POWER QUALITY AND
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
• Power Quality
• "The concept of powering and grounding
sensitive equipment in a manner that is
suitable to the operation of that equipment."
• Electronic equipment & controls are
increasing
• System control and energy efficiency is a
priority
• The modern power grid is changing
• High dependence on reliable electrical
systems
• Some Facilities operate 7 days a week, 24
hours a day
• Many facilities have high cost of downtime
www.messungelectricalengineering.c

CONSEQUENCES
• Energy efficiency and Power Quality is
increasingly a concern of organizations
• Maintaining Power Quality to the level
that is required by the application enables
safe operation and reduces costly
downtime.
• Power failure, malfunction, overheating,
flickering light, energy waste, etc.

TYPES OF POWER QUALITY
PHENOMENON

HARMONICS
• Harmonics are extra frequencies
(multiples of fundamental frequency) that
when present in an electrical circuit,
distort the AC sine wave
• Causes: Non-linear electrical loads;
Loads with rapidly changing energy
consumption
• Consequences: Inefficient operation;
Excess heat (skin effect); Overheating in
neutral conductors; Decreased efficiency
and lifespan of equipment; Circuit
breakers can trip
• Benefit of measuring: Identify the
source of harmonics in the electrical
Capacitors destroyed due to
harmonics system; Increase operational safety and
efficiency

SAGS AND SWELLS
• Voltage Sag is a decrease in rms voltage less
than 0.9 pu for a duration less than 1
minute
• Voltage Swell is a increase in rms voltage
greater than 1.1 pu for a duration less than
1 minute
• Causes – Heavy energy loads turning on or
off (inside) or network faults (outside)
• Consequences – Damage to machines and
equipment; Loss of use; Short interruptions
can be catastrophic for sensitive applications
• Benefit of measuring – Avoid damage and
costly downtime

om
TRANSIENTS
• Transients are high frequency energy packets which
superimpose on fundamental frequency wave and severely
affect the high impedance circuit
• Causes: Switching operation (arcing), lightning strike or
malfunction
• Consequences: Fast change in voltage, current or load; Can
lead to insulation breakdown; Breaker trips and damage to
equipment
• Benefit of measuring: Avoid costly downtime and damage to
equipment

om
UNBALANCE
• Deviation in voltage or current waveform
from perfect sinusoidal, in terms of
magnitude or phase shift is called unbalance
in a system.
• Causes: Asymmetry of loads like single
phase loads, phase-to-phase loads or
unbalanced three phase loads (e.g. welding
equipment)
• Consequences: Reduced efficiency; Excess
heat and overheating; Device failure and
damage to equipment; Reduced lifespan of
equipment
• Benefit of measuring: Increase lifespan;
Avoid overheating; Reduce unwanted
downtime

FLICKER
• Voltage variations cause light density
changes in lamps, which can result in visual
perceptions referred to as flicker
• Causes: Load variations (furnaces, welding
machines, generators, VFDs, large motors);
Wind generators
• Consequences: Visible fluctuations in
brightness of a lamp; Possible health
problems
• Benefit of measuring: Find out what
equipment within the electrical distribution is
causing Flicker

RESIDUAL CURRENT
MONITORING
• RCM plays important role in high availability
supply systems such as Data Centres and
Hospitals
• Rapid & direct identification of faults and
insulation problems
• Avoids fire risks and increases system
availability
• Extra safety in areas in which no RCDs can
be used due to operational reasons
• Preventive maintenance = higher
productivity & uptime
• TN-S system (5-conductor network) – Basic precondition
for the safe operation of IT equipment, machinery
• and networked systems including residual current
monitoring

POWER QUALITY MONITORING (PQM)
• Power Quality Monitoring (PQM) is the
process of gathering, analyzing and
interpreting raw measurement data into
useful information
• PQM is often done to improve system-wide
power quality performance
• Power Quality Monitoring includes:
• Power Quality metering, monitoring and
onsite measurements
• Temporary and Permanent power
quality monitoring to facilitate problem
solutions
• Documenting and trending system
performance to increase system reliability
