Edit before proofreading; structural flaws inside a document are frequently more important than 
surface mistakes. Make sure you have a thesis statement that is easily recognised. The rest of the 
paper should connect to the claim(s) you made there in some way.
Between paragraphs, there should be a logical link. If you're having difficulties connecting the two 
paragraphs, yet they're both crucial to your thesis, consider rearranging them or connecting them 
with a transition word or sentence.
Remove any ambiguous wording; if something doesn't make sense or seem "natural" to you, it's 
unlikely to make sense to your reader. Avoid using the same words over and over again. A thesaurus 
(either online or printed) might be helpful in this situation.
Similarly, avoid using a sentence pattern that is repeated. In order to diversity your phrases, you can 
utilise compound sentences and punctuation (such as semicolons and dashes).

If at all feasible, print a physical copy of the document so you may make changes right on the page. 
In paper, they're simpler to notice than on a computer screen.
All mistakes are not caught by computer "spell check" and "grammar check" applications. For 
example, while both "their" and "their" are spelt correctly and so seem to a word processor as 
"correct," their semantics are vastly different.
Make sure you're punctuating properly. Look it up if you're unsure or feel like you're using 
punctuation because you believe you should rather than because there's a clear guideline. Many 
resources devoted to certain forms of punctuation are accessible at the Writing Center, both online 
and in person.
