Today’s battery energy storage solution is based on a number of different battery technologies, each of which has its own distinct qualities and benefits. Today the most generally used technologies are lithium-ion batteries for their high energy density, quick charging and extended operating life. These batteries are extensively utilized for utility-scale, commercial and domestic energy storage applications. Lead-acid batteries have been around for decades and remain a good option for some backup power and off-grid applications. Although they are usually lower in energy density and have shorter life spans than lithium-ion batteries, they may nonetheless provide low-cost alternatives for storage in certain instances.
