New York City tenants have important rights when it comes to heat during the colder months, thanks to the city's strict heating regulations. The New York heating law is designed to ensure that all residential units are kept at safe and livable temperatures during “heat season,” which runs from October 1 through May 31 each year. According to the law, landlords are required to maintain indoor temperatures of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees. During the night, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., apartments must be at least 62 degrees, regardless of the outside temperature.
