As temperatures drop, heating becomes a crucial concern for New Yorkers especially tenants who rely on landlords to provide safe, livable conditions. The New York heating law outlines strict requirements that protect tenants during the city’s official “heat season,” which runs from October 1 through May 31. During this period, if the outside temperature falls below 55°F between 6 AM and 10 PM, landlords must maintain indoor temperatures of at least 68°F. At night, regardless of the outdoor temperature, apartments must stay at least 62°F.
