their construction. Generally, handpans can be found in five different materials: 
 
1. Pure Steel: Traditional handpans were crafted from thick sheets of raw steel. Pure steel offers high 
resonance and a soothing sound, making it a popular choice among many players. These handpans 
are also cost-effective since they are not treated with any additional materials. However, pure steel 
is susceptible to rust, particularly in humid environments, requiring meticulous maintenance. 
 
2. Nitrided Steel: Nitrided steel handpans were the original handpan type introduced by PanArt. They 
offer good preservation and require relatively low maintenance. Nitrided steel handpans produce a 
high-frequency sound, making them suitable for outdoor use. While they still need some 
maintenance to prevent rust, they are more resilient in humid climates. 
 
3. Stainless Steel: For those seeking minimal maintenance, stainless steel handpans are an excellent 
choice. Made with chromium, nickel, and iron, they are highly resistant to rust, ensuring long-lasting 
durability. However, the production cost is higher, resulting in a relatively expensive option. Be 
cautious of quality when purchasing, as some manufacturers may offer lower-quality instruments. 
 
4.Ember Steel: Ember steel is a subtype of stainless steel that requires minimal maintenance. It is 
slightly more affordable than traditional stainless steel handpans. Ember steel handpans produce a 
deeper and more resonant sound, making them suitable for both fast and slow-paced music. 
However, they are highly sensitive, and striking them gently is essential to avoid producing loud, 
disruptive noises. 
 
Choosing the right handpan material depends on your budget, maintenance preferences, and desired 
sound quality. Each type offers a unique playing experience, so it's essential to select the one that 
best suits your musical style and needs.
