GUIDE
WHAT IS REFINISH
COATINGS LEVELER?
Refinish coatings leveler, often referred
to simply as a leveler, is a type of
coating applied to automotive surfaces
to create a smooth and even
foundation for paint. It is typically used
after the application of primers or
basecoats to eliminate imperfections
such as orange peel, dust nibs, and
minor surface irregularities. Levelers
come in various forms, including liquid
compounds and aerosol sprays, each
designed to achieve a flawless finish.
IMPORTANCE OF
REFINISH COATINGS
LEVELER
Achieving a flawless paint finish is essential
in automotive refinishing for both aesthetic
and functional reasons. Not only does it
enhance the vehicle's appearance, but it also
protects the underlying surface from
environmental damage and corrosion.
Refinish coatings leveler plays a critical role
in this process by ensuring that the surface is
smooth and free of defects before the final
paint layers are applied. Without proper
leveling, imperfections in the underlying
surface can become more pronounced,
resulting in an unsightly finish and
compromising the durability of the paint job.
HOW REFINISH COATINGS
LEVELER WORKS
Refinish coatings leveler works by
filling in small imperfections in the
surface of the substrate and creating a
uniform surface tension across the
area being coated. This helps to
eliminate variations in surface texture
and reflectivity, resulting in a smooth
and consistent finish. Levelers typically
contain special additives such as flow
agents and leveling agents that help
the coating to spread evenly and self-
level over the surface.
