Microplastics in cosmetics have traditionally been used as exfoliants, film-formers, and bulking agents in products such as facial scrubs, toothpastes, and foundations. These microplastics are manufactured in controlled processes, typically as polyethylene or polypropylene microbeads. Historically, microplastic ingredients were among the cheaper components in cosmetic formulations. As they phase out, many natural or biodegradable alternatives come at a slightly higher cost due to more complex sourcing and production. However, these price increases are being offset by economies of scale and broader adoption of sustainable products.
