Wurtzite is a hexagonal polymorph of zinc sulfide (ZnS), co-occurring with sphalerite in many zinc deposits. In commercial practice, zinc sulfide ores are processed collectively, and the dominant metrics are zinc concentrate production rather than the specific polymorph. Global zinc mine production has seen modest growth over the last decade, with expansions in China, Peru, Australia, and Kazakhstan offsetting closures of older, higher-cost underground operations. After a dip in 2020 during the pandemic, zinc output recovered in 2021–2022 and has remained relatively stable, reflecting balanced demand from construction, galvanizing, and die-cast applications.
