process services to India. This price advantage was not merely linked to 
cheaper wages but also incorporated cost savings through operational 
advantages including work cycles that were around the clock due to time 
zone differences. Indian IT companies took advantage of this and provided 
their services round the clock so that the business of its clients remained 
intact.
Over a period, Indian IT service providers started outsourcing full project 
management and end-to-end solutions. Major IT players have gone in for 
diversification by investing heavily in R&D, quality certifications, and 
international delivery capability. Every one of these turned-around stories 
has resulted in the penetration of the offshore services domain by many 
start-ups and mid-size companies that now form part of the offshore 
services ecosystem.
What gives India a competitive edge in the offshore IT market?
One factor that makes India relevant and competitive despite many 
challenges is the constant need to learn and upskill to stay relevant. The 
changing nature of the IT industry requires an agile and learning attitude 
with many changes coming in at regular intervals. The track record of Indian 
offshore IT service firms has been very good at welcoming change and 
adapting to new technologies at a rapid pace.  This elasticity provides 
customer confidence that the Indian IT workforce will work today and be 
relevant tomorrow.
From a small start with basic facilities, the Indian offshore IT services firm 
has rapidly upgraded its infrastructure and IT ecosystem especially around

on how to shape themselves for superior professional conduct.  This makes 
the collaboration process easy and builds trust which is the foundation for a 
good long-term outsourcing relationship. 
Competition and Challenges
India does face good competition from countries like the Philippines, 
Eastern European countries, and previously Ireland. India has maintained 
its competitive edge by reinventing itself as the technology landscape 
changed.  Over time it has been offering higher value-creation areas such 
as digital transformation, research and development, and product 
engineering. Such a shift has allowed Indian firms to command higher 
prices and consolidate partnerships with global clients.
There are of course challenges. The offshore outsourcing model is in 
danger of being disrupted by the growing cost of labour in urban centres 
and growing protectionism in other countries, as well as the global trend 
toward automation and AI. However, the IT industry in India is fighting back; 
opening to newer markets, following investments in innovation zones, and 
taking a cue from government efforts such as the Digital India and Make in 
India campaigns to nurture indigenous tech potential.

is the product of a confluence of ideal circumstances in demographic
