Colored concrete floors
There is no second thought that Colored concrete floors are appealing and 
distinct, and they can significantly improve the appearance of a building.

Paint

● There are concrete flooring paints on the market, some of which are 
labelled for industrial use. However, proper preparation is essential; if the 
concrete slab is not porous enough, the paint may flake off once the floor is 
used. 
● Painting a larger area, such as an industrial floor or warehouse, can also be 
time-consuming, expensive, and labor-intensive. Painting is probably best 
suited to a small, low-traffic area.

● Acid and water-based stains create permanent colour effects on the surface 
by forming a chemical reaction within the concrete. Even if the concrete has 
been in place for some time, it can be stained. By staining different areas of 
the floor in different colours, patterns and variety can be created.
● Acid-based stained concrete have fewer colour options than water-based 
stains, and because of the nature of the process, the results may vary from 
one floor to the next. Acid-based stains are also translucent, which means 
that stains on the floor may still show through. Water-based colours can be 
more intense.

● Dyes, which are usually water-based or solvent-based, also provide 
permanent colour. They colour the concrete by permeating the surface 
rather than reacting chemically, and the results can be translucent when 
using water-based dyes.

● A tinted sealer adds a wash of colour 
to the concrete while sealing it. 
● Solvent-based sealers are more 
durable than water-based sealers.
● If a large area needs to be treated 
with one colour or if an existing 
colour needs to be enhanced, a 
tinted sealer may be appealing.

● Water-based sealants may not 
perform well when sprayed because 
the paint and water can separate. 
Tinted sealers are not a long-term 
solution; the floor may need to be 
resealed after a while due to normal 
wear and tear.

● This method is appropriate for new concrete floors as well as major 
surfacing of existing slabs. 
● Adding a pigment to the concrete mix colours the entire batch; the concrete 
is coloured all the way through, not just near the top surface level.
● Although this process is good for creating large blocks of solid colour, it is an 
expensive way to achieve a coloured concrete floor.

● It should be noted that none of these four coloration methods improve the 
durability or lifespan of the floor, nor do they protect the concrete from 
impact or abrasion damage: they simply add colour.

● This option is available for both new and existing floors. 
● Resin coating systems, such as RCR Flooring Products' Rinol systems, add 
colour and shine to industrial, commercial, and residential floors, and they 
can also be used to create decorative patterns. When the surface must be 
highly durable, chemical, temperature, or slip resistant, and easy to clean, 
resin coating systems are used.

● The system's liquid components are mixed and applied to the slab, where 
they set to form a hard polymer surface; the surface can be built up in two 
or three structural layers on top of the concrete base.
● Preparation is critical for achieving a good result on existing floors; the 
surface must be clean and permeable enough to accept the resin coating. In 
any case, the resin floor may take several days to complete because the 
layers must cure. Time and money should therefore be considered. Visit

Hardener for colours
● A concrete colour hardener, also known as a coloured surface hardener, can 
be used on both new and old floors. As a dry-shake powder on top of 
freshly poured concrete is a common application method. 
● The powder is applied immediately after the concrete has been screeded, 
eliminating the need for an additional stage in the construction process. 
This contributes to surface hardeners being a cost-effective way to colour a 
large industrial or commercial floor, or even different sections of the floor. 
Surface hardeners can be applied mechanically or manually to smaller 
areas.
