● Cement is the binding material used for building 
construction purposes. 
● Cement is a combination of finely ground powders that are 
mixed with water, that is then set to a hard mass. 
● It is a chemical combination of the cement compounds 
with water that yields a gel-like material that can be 
spread over a high surface area.
● Essentially cement comes in 2 types, 
Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) & 
Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC).

● OPC 53 grade is the most preferred type for specific 
applications like pre-stressed concrete and high strength 
concrete.
● Whereas, PPC is proven to be more suitable for normal 
house building, even in aggressive environments.
● PPC has a low setting time, compared to OPC but it 
hardens over a period of time, with proper curing.
