5 Ways Climate Change is Affecting our Environment
5 Ways Climate
Change is
Affecting our
Environment
It’s no secret that climate change has
already affected our environment, and
there is no indication that it’s going to
slow down any time soon. Scientists
believe that the rising temperatures are
going to continue to increase for the next
few decades. They believe that the most
damage is being done by greenhouse
gases created by our actions as humans.
As people who care about
this planet, we need to be
aware of what is happening
so we can take action for
our planet earth. Here are 5
ways climate change is
affecting our environment.
• Sea Levels
One of the environmental changes already
taking place is the increasingly high sea
levels. Rising temperatures are causing
Arctic sea ice to not form as it normally
would. With less ice, heat is not reflected
in the atmosphere and is instead absorbed
by the ocean. This causes warmer oceans,
and therefore, rising sea levels.
• Food Supply
Climate change is affecting the farms and
vineyards that provide us the food we buy at
our local grocery stores. In the American
Midwest, heavy rain caused by climate change
made the environment too wet to grow plants,
which resulted in lost crops. There is also a
possible impact on livestock. Heat can cause
direct stress to livestock, making them more
vulnerable to disease. Droughts caused by
changing temperatures will reduce the food
supply for the livestock as well.
• Air Quality
When we burn coal and gas for power, we
release carbon dioxide into the air. This
builds up in the atmosphere and causes
potential problems for the air we breathe.
Higher temperatures can lead to more
ozone, which is an air pollutant. Ozone is
the main component in smog, which has
been shown to lessen lung function, more
hospital admissions, and increased asthma
episodes.
• Stronger
Storms
As temperatures rise, water temperatures
rise. Warmer oceans combined with more
heat and water evaporation mean there is
a higher potential for hurricanes. As the
sea levels continue to rise, higher locations
are also potentially subject to storms and
the destruction caused by the currents and
waves.
