Online. The first issue featured the names of powerful Virginians and business
owners. The name of the magazine was changed to reflect the fact that it
was published in the Pandemic Era the newspaper purchased a Goss 40-page
offset printing press, which increased the newspaper's capacity to 32 pages.
The Virginia News Journal's online edition contains digitized images of more
than a million newspaper pages. The library's archive contains thousands of
imprints of Virginia newspapers dating back to the 1700s. This includes the
Richmond Planet, a daily newspaper for African-American communities in
Virginia. Its digital version is available for free and features an extensive
searchable database. In addition to digital images, the Virginia News Journal
is also available in print form in a print edition.
The newspaper began in Staunton and was founded by Brig. Gen. Hierome
Lindsay Opie, who had a great interest in journalism. Opie's introductory
editorial, Salutation just two months after he had turned 24. It was a moving
and powerful statement that has been reprinted over the years. His values
and ideals are still true today.
