Whether you are a dance aspirant or pro performer, your dancewear plays a pivotal role in the 
way your performance goes and it’s no news that a good Canberra dancewear comes at quite a 
solid price range, and the same is the case with dance shoes and other accessories for 
dancers. The best way to make it last longer and ever performance-ready is to take good care of 
them in the right way. But, maintaining and cleaning it in between many rehearsals and 
performances is almost an impossible task for most folks.

Dance Outfits
Dance costumes come in all forms and it differs from people’s preferences. Most of them except for 
certain technical dance outfits can be used only once or twice as their materials are pretty expensive. 
But whatever the kind of dance costume you buy, do not wash them before the performance as there 
are chances of shape damage or irreparable patches during the washing process ruining your entire 
outfit and performance.
To protect your dance costumes it's best to read the wash instructions attached to the outfit or simply 
do a soft hand wash with a mild detergent in cold water. When you do so make sure you have all the 
extra removable fittings on the dress like the trimmings or bows. Avoid hard scrubbing or wringing, 
instead, just roll the costume in the towel after washing and let it dry naturally. Never use direct 
sunlight, ideally, air drying is best for dance costumes.
All the leather, satin, chiffon and velvet materials should be dry cleaned professionally to keep it 
damage-free.
Leotards 
The modern-day leotards are made from special high-performance materials that need special care to 
maintain their texture and stretch. Make sure to turn it inside out before you wash them to avoid snugs 
especially with the solid coloured ones.
Always use only mild detergents and wash them in a gentle cycle or hand wash in cold or warm water 
only, hot water is a strict no-no. Never use any kind of after wash liquid or fabric softeners on leotards 
as it can build up fibres making the whole material less stretchable. Finally, leave them hanging in 
direct sunlight or hang them by a radiator or similar heat source to dry them off. Avoid using the dryer. 
In case of stained leotards, make sure you treat the stain properly before washing; also in most cases, 
leotards should be soaked for at least 2hours before actual washing. The safe way here is to check in 
wash instructions and make a move accordingly.
Other Dance Wears
As we mentioned above different dancewear varies from one piece to another and not every outfit 
is difficult to wash. Street wears, exercise clothes, materials like spandex, jazz pants, men’s tights, 
t-shirts, nylon and other cotton blend dancewear types can be washed and dried in the machine 
and dryer just like regular clothes. You can even go with heavy cycles if it’s too dirty, but note to 
use cold water to avoid colour bleed. Also, skip the fabric conditioner and make sure to use mild 
cycles or use air dry. As harsh drying can affect the stretchability of the materials or shrink as they 
are pretty delicate and light. In most of these cases, the outfits get back to their original shape 
once worn again however, if it’s too bothersome for you, it’s best to lay the costumes flat on the 
floor to dry.
